A new beginning for me
Casablanca is a movie that I have never seen before but had heard about it from time to time. I never really put much thought into the details that I had come across in person or via newer movies that had references to it. I was not sure how I would like an older black and white movie from so long ago with only hearing about these actors from my mom and dad about how great they were.
When I started watching this movie I was not sure what to expect or the plot that was going to be involved. As the movie progressed I was lost at first trying to grasp the mood that the director was setting up and why the picked the setting. When the main actor Rick was introduced I sort of got the chills because this was one of my dad’s favorite actors that he always talked about. After watching it for a bit I started to see why, the way he has this cool, strong and to the point type of man who didn’t want anything to do with gossip or other people’s business.
When I started watching the movie more and started getting into the plot I really enjoyed myself. It made me think of how they could make such a great movie when it was such a terrible time for many just when WW2 was starting.
Casablanca was a move about where everyone who was sick of the war wanted to go to Lisbon to fulfill their dreams of being free and believed that the war was just silly. With so many people in a purgatory type of situation waiting and waiting for their chance to get out of Casablanca there was much deception and theft going on and the so called authorities were just as guilty. With a heavy romance that evolved within the move made this movie very good.
As our book wanted us to evaluate this movie I would put this in the complexity of the human relationships due to how complicated rick and Ilsa’s love affair was. With the movie going back into time and revealing how the love story got crushed though rick’s perspective and leaving it at that made a person kind of furious and made me feel he had every right to act the way he did. But after Ilsa gets to tell him why she left the way she did it became a much more pleasant relationship that they once had, even with all the turmoil that was going around them.
I really liked this move and all that was involved it make it, it was unusual to me of how there was so much talking to set the plot rather than the typical movie of today where plot is set by less words and more emotion and action. I would definitely recommend this to my entire film buff movie going friends.
